Making Movies

I think making a film is a balance between a vision that comes from within, and the raw material the world gives out. I have learned from difficult filmmaking experiences that the more I try to bend all the elements in the scene to my will, the actors, the setting, the cinematography, the timing, the less effective the scene becomes. Instead, it's better to come in with a vague picture and build, in a collaborative way with my team, an interesting scene. I want to be surprised by something that someone else, be it in acting, lighting, or camerawork, does and capture that. I want to get into the groove of problem-solving on set, to make the work dynamic and fun. It is the journey and not the destination. In this medium the destination can be captured, altered, almost perfected, and put online to watch whenever ad inifinitum.  But it's the experience of being there, of making the thing that I cherish.
